Stroke Awareness Seminar March 25th, Meadowlands Community Center

Stroke is the 4th leading cause of death, and the leading cause of serious long-term disability in the United States. Out of an average of 795,000 strokes that occur annually, 130,000 result in death.  Most strokes, about 87%, are ischemic – the most dangerous kind, where a blood clot blocks blood flow to the brain requiring fast medical intervention to prevent death or serious brain injury.  While the majority of strokes happen to those over 65 years of age, in 2009 34% of victims were younger.

Creating awareness of strokes and their symptoms is key to getting the best outcome for patients. Meadowlands Ambulance Service is hosting a Stroke Awareness Seminar sponsored by Essentia Health St. Mary’s at 6:30-8:00PM, March 25th at the Meadowlands Community Center.

The Essentia – St. Mary’s Stroke Center presenters include Emily Vang – Tele-Stroke Program Specialist, Dimitrios Giannakidis and Diane Roach. They will cover the early signs and symptoms of stroke, the importance of early medical care, the different types of strokes and their treatment.

The Meadowlands Ambulance Service invites EMS providers and volunteer departments from Alborn, Floodwood, Cotton and Toivola to attend.  The event is also open to the community as a whole and pizza will be served.

In our region, both Essentia - St. Mary’s and St. Luke’s Hospitals have the Primary Stroke Center Certification.  If you think you or a loved one is having a stroke you need to act F.A.S.T.  Call 911 for help immediately if you notice any of the following:

Face: Side of the face droops or feels numb
Arm: Muscle weakness, numbness on one side of body
Speech: Slurred or strange speech, unable to repeat a sentence.
Time: The faster the person gets to the hospital the better the outcome. Patients who arrive within 3 hours of their first symptoms tend to have less disability.
